prerogative of a Technical, Scientific Police and Cyber-crime Department

1. Digital Crime Investigation & Prevention

  • Detect, investigate, and prevent cyber-crimes (e.g., hacking, data theft, online fraud, phishing, identity theft).
  • Monitor cyber threats and ensure cybersecurity readiness.
  • Assist in tracking and prosecuting cyber-criminals nationally and internationally.

2. Digital Forensics

  • Analyze computers, mobile phones, and electronic devices seized during investigations.
  • Recover deleted or encrypted data to serve as legal evidence.
  • Secure digital traces and maintain a strict chain of custody.

3. Scientific and Technical Investigations

  • Conduct forensic analyses (DNA, fingerprints, toxicology, ballistics, etc.).
  • Support investigations with laboratory evidence to establish facts scientifically.
  • Collaborate with medical examiners, chemists, and ballistics experts.

4. Cybersecurity and Network Surveillance

  • Secure institutional IT infrastructure and prevent intrusion.
  • Detect malicious activities targeting networks, servers, or sensitive data.
  • Support institutions and private sector in responding to cyber incidents.

5. Training and Capacity Building

  • Train officers and staff in forensic sciences, cyber law, digital investigations, and cyber hygiene.
  • Raise awareness about cyber threats among the public, especially youth and vulnerable populations.

6. Technical Support to Investigations

  • Provide technical tools and expertise to support surveillance, wiretaps (where legal), geolocation, and other high-tech investigative tools.
  • Deploy drones, surveillance devices, or trace devices in sensitive operations.

7. Legal and Regulatory Collaboration

  • Collaborate with judicial authorities to present technical evidence in court.
  • Work with lawmakers to adapt legislation to the evolution of cybercrime.

8. International Cooperation

  • Liaise with Interpol, AFRIPOL, and cybersecurity agencies across borders.
  • Participate in cross-border investigations involving cybercrime networks.

9. Public Awareness & Protection

  • Conduct public sensitization campaigns on cyber safety and digital risks.
  • Create helplines or digital platforms for cybercrime reporting.

10. Technology Monitoring & Innovation

  • Stay updated with emerging technologies (AI, blockchain, dark web).
  • Develop new tools and methods for digital surveillance and cybercrime detection.
